BIS Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) is a mandatory registration system under the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for specified electronics, IT and some other notified products, under which manufacturers must get their products tested and registered before they can be sold in India.
Core idea
CRS is operated under Scheme II of the BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018, and was introduced in 2012 by MeitY along with BIS.
It focuses mainly on electronic, IT and certain other categories (like Speaker, Led Items, Led TV, Laptops batteries, etc.) that are notified through Compulsory Registration Orders / Quality Control Orders by the concerned ministries.
What it requires ?
Every manufacturer (Indian or foreign) of a notified product must:Get the product tested in a BIS‑recognized lab as per the relevant Indian Standard.
Apply online to BIS for registration on a self‑declaration of conformity basis (no routine factory audit under CRS). Once registration is granted, the manufacturer can affix the BIS Standard Mark with a unique R‑number on the product and packaging, indicating compliance with Indian Standards.
