Indian governments and companies have adopted extended producer responsibility to help address the growing problem of E-waste\u00a0 & Plastic \u2014 used electronics contain materials that cannot be safely thrown away with regular household trash. In 2016, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, people threw away 2.5 million tons of Cells, PHones, Batteries ,TVs parts, Electronic parts, computers Parts and Printers etc.<\/sup> Many governments have partnered with corporations in creating the necessary collection and recycling infrastructure.\u00a0<\/sup>Some argue that local and manufacturer-supported extended producer responsibility laws give manufacturers greater responsibility for the reuse, recycling, and disposal of their own products.<\/span><\/p>\n

E-Waste Meaning?<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

India generates more than two million tonnes of E-Waste annually and also imports huge amounts of E-Waste from other countries around the world<\/strong>.<\/span><\/h4>\n

  1. Electronic waste or e-waste is generated when electronic and electrical equipment become\u00a0unfit for their originally intended use<\/strong>\u00a0or have crossed the expiry date.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Examples<\/strong>: Computers, servers, mainframes, monitors, compact discs (CDs), printers, scanners, calculators, fax machines, battery cells, cellular phones, TVs, iPods, medical apparatus, washing machines, refrigerators, and air conditioners are examples of e-waste (when unfit for use).<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. E-waste typically consists of\u00a0metals, plastics, cathode ray tubes<\/strong>\u00a0(CRTs), printed circuit boards, cables, and so on.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. The presence of\u00a0toxic substances<\/strong> such as liquid crystal, Battery, lithium, mercury, nickel, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), cadmium, chrome, cobalt, copper, and lead, makes it very hazardous<\/span>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    E-Waste Management in India<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

    1. Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change rolled out the\u00a0E-Waste (Management) Rules in 2016\u00a0<\/strong>to reduce e-waste production and increase recycling.<\/span><\/li>\n
    2. Under these rules, the government introduced EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility), which makes producers liable to collect 30 per cent to 70 per cent (over seven years) of the e-waste they produce.<\/span><\/li>\n
    3. The government should\u00a0encourage the new entrepreneurs<\/strong>\u00a0by providing the necessary financial support and technological guidance.<\/span><\/li>\n
    4. Establishment of start-ups<\/strong>\u00a0connected with e-waste recycling and disposal should be encouraged by giving special concessions<\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      In the field of\u00a0waste management, Extended Producer Responsibility\u00a0(EPR) is a strategy to add all of the Environmental costs\u00a0associated with a product throughout the\u00a0product life cycle\u00a0to the\u00a0market price of that product.\u00a0<\/sup>Extended producer responsibility legislation is a driving force behind the adoption of remanufacturing initiatives because it “focuses on the end-of-use treatment of consumer products and has the primary aim to increase the amount and degree of product recovery and to minimize the environmental impact of waste materials.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
